I’m a firm believer that in order to develop something, you must first understand it . And confidence is no different. The problem has been though, confidence as a topic has been complicated beyond all belief.
For example – if you search the internet you will find many definitions and explanations. Some of the definitions describe it as:
The feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something (Oxford Dictionary)
The quality of being certain of your abilities or of having trust in people, plans, or the future (Cambridge Dictionary)
Confidence means trust or faith in someone (Wikipedia)
And on the surface these definitions might seem ok. But none of them describe confidence as a construct. In fact its extremely hard to find a definition that defines it in a way that we can learn it. The nuts and bolts of what it is. The definitions are woolly – and describe how we will feel – more than what it is. So following many years of research, practice, and personal experience – here is my definition:
“Confidence is the thoughts and actions that can help you achieve and cope in life”.
Yes its that simple. Confidence is a series of thoughts and actions – and if you combine them with images and visions – you have a very powerful recipe for achieving and coping in life.
But one of the greatest discoveries I ever made about confidence was this….confidence is a skill. Yes confidence is a skill and thus can be learned.
There is no such thing as a confidence gene. Neither is confidence for the lucky or the gifted. Yes, confidence can be learned and acquired. Whatever your disposition or personality type, everyone has the ability to develop confidence.
This was one of the greatest discoveries I ever made….and it had a profound impact on my life.
